Have you ever done something your entire life and just presumed everyone else did it? I'm sure many of us have sung the wrong lyric or used an implement the 'wrong way' thinking we were doing fine only to be questioned by a friend or relative! It's an odd moment, when you realise something you had never questioned isn't quite right. For ages I thought the beach boys sang 'biking around'- a jovial song about cycling not 'I get around'... A less 'tour de france-y' song.
Recently I discovered an internal oddity that I had never questioned before. It all started with 'you know how, when you read, your inner voice sounds like you...' UM... No.
I read in the voices of characters. For example, when I read a news article about, say, Andy Murray, I read in the voice of an old fashioned BBC reporter until I get to a quote and then I read it in an 'Andy Murray Voice'. If I've never heard the voice before, I go with the voice that fits the best, an article on cider will sound like a Wurzle and a book about a large teddy will be read like a children's presenter (the bear being played by Brian Blessed). Up until recently I just presumed everyone did this!
This seems to be completely automatic so I never thought it was unusual. No one I've spoken to seems to do this so the question is, is there anyone else who does this??
I'm not sure if it's a Tourette's thing or a Deanna thing! Some people I've asked have said they read stories this way but not news or factual information, wierd right?!
I'd love to hear from anyone else who reads 'weird'!!
